Main Volume

As you can see by the above example, the main volume contains commentary regarding the researched topic. This commentary may be quoted, but will be considered secondary authority. At the bottom of each page are a series of paragraphs called footnotes. These footnotes relate to the small superior numbers in the commentary, providing references to primary authority that support that part of the commentary. Thus, if you read a sentence in the commentary that is relevant to your research, and at the end of that sentence there is a small number "16", you would look at the bottom of the page for the corresponding paragraph 16. That paragraph would contain references to other authorities such as cases, statutes, law review articles, etc.
